LNV International water-related projects (LNV Water)
The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) aims with its international water-related policies to strengthen the cooperation between the Netherlands and international partners towards the wise use of water. The Ministry wants to do justice to vital concepts such integrated water management, sustainable development and international water policy frameworks and conventions.
Thematic areas of support include:
- contribution to sustainable development (ecological, social and economic);
- support to an integrated management of water systems;
- support to an integrated approach of water chains (drinking water, sanitation, irrigation); and
- support to creating the environment conducive for good water management (good governance and local participation in decision-making).
The implementation of the international water-related projects goes beyond the sole government responsibility. Partnerships between governments, with NGOs, research institutions, NGOs, private sector and local communities are considered key to a successful implementation and sustainable results.
Examples of geographical areas targeted by LNV are:
- densely populated river deltas and low-lying fragile coastal zones in Asia, Africa and Latin-America;
- transboundary river basins and inland seas in Asia, Africa and Latin-America; and
- river catchments in countries in Eastern Europe and Northern Africa (neighbours of Europe, pre-accession countries, recently (2004) joined EU members).
Through the funding of international water-related projects and programmes the Ministry is contributing to its water policy. These projects and programmes are presented as LNV Water projects on the PROFORIS web site.
