DGIS expenditure on international forest-related projects over the years and over continents

The main expenditure of the Netherlands on international support for forests and biological diversity is realised through the the Directorate-General for International Cooperation (DGIS) as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Most activities are relatively easy to identify and quantify. However, substantial international assistance from the Netherlands is also channelled through NGOs such as ICCO, Novib, SNV etc. as well a through NUFFIC, through more integrated projects and programmes. The components of these contributions to the conservation and sustainable management of forests and biodiversity on the moment are still hard to quantify and thus not incorporated in the figures below.

The figures below consist of the usual ODA-expenditure of DGIS/Ministry of Foreign Affairs on international cooperation relevant to sustainable management of forests and forest related biodiversity including the expenditure on BBI/PIN-MATRA programme. The tables and graphs are indicative and are meant to highlight trends rather then to provide absolute figures.

The expenditure on international forest-related activities differs per continent (Africa, Asia, Latin America and projects with a worldwide coverage) as illustrated in table 2 and graph 2 below. The figure in table 2 shows a proportional division of forest-related expenditure over the continents (the total is 100%).

Graph 2 shows Forest related expenditure over the years per continent in euros. For example, in the year 2007 there has been spent: € 16.99 million for Africa; € 7.9 million for Asia; only 0.05 million € for Europe, € 14.98 million for Latin America and € 34.5 million worldwide, totalling € 74.4 million of DGIS expenditure (ODA) on forest-related activities. In 2008 a decrease could be noted to € 65.6 millon for the total on international Forest expenditure with specifically € 18.0 million for Africa, € 5.6 million for Asia, € 16.0 million for Latin America and expenses of € 25.96 million for Worldwide activities.
